But the blood of founding patriots ran strong in the veins of pioneers who moved into the new territory when it opened up just as our nation approached its 50th anniversary. Thomas Jefferson’s grandson was Tallahassee’s first reform mayor. Alexander Hamilton, Jr., ran for delegate to Congress in territorial Florida’s first full-term election, but lost. A grandson of Patrick Henry is buried at Quincy. George Washington’s great-grandniece came and married Napoleon Bonaparte’s nephew in the Florida capital’s eighth wedding.
