London: Herbert, 1797. Near Fine. Tall 8vo (slightly over 10 inches tall; 26.5 cm), horizontally grained red calf ca. 1820s, gilt borders and spine decorations, watered silk endpapers with gilt decorated borders, leather turn-ins with lovely gilt decorations, bookplate likely from the Faithful family, late 18th Century, described as "Plain armorial with a passant Talbot [hound] as blazon. The motto is Nec Timeo Nec Sperno - "I neither fear nor desire". Inside the shield are motifs of a cross-flory with lattice patterning, ermine patterning, rampant lions, cross-moline, lion heads, bars, chevron, bendlets, martletts and more." Collated complete with 63 plates including folding plate, lovely copy with minor darkening, contents clean and bright, the majority of the plates also in fine condition. The portraits are terrific, well engraved and filled with character.

With portrait of cross-dressing Frances Stuart as frontispiece, engraved title page dated 1797, list of subscribers, advertisement to Part I, advertisement to Part III dated 1796, and 56 other portraits (one folding) and six engraved plates of royal seals.

With three portraits of Mary, Queen of Scots, and King James IV, two portraits of King James V, and individual portraits of Alexander III, David I, Malcom I, Robert II, Robert III, James I, James II, James III, James VI (later James I of England) and Scottish queens Mary of Guise, Margaret of Denmark, Anne of Denmark.

Among the other interesting characters are the Scottish polymath James Crichton, aka the Admirable Crichton, and Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond, a famous beauty at the court of King Charles II of England, cross-dressing as a man, as well as statesmen, clergy, martyrs, etc.… Ler mais

Later straight-grained green morocco, boards bordered with a gilt Greek key roll, spine divided by raised bands gilt, 3rd and 7th compartments lettered direct in gilt, other compartments tooled in blind and gilt, edges gilt. A few plates lightly foxed, else just a little spotting. A little rubbed, a touch of wear to rear board. Neat ownership inscription of Vernon J. Watney, Cornbury, to flyleaf, gift inscription to Thos. Ogilvy, Esq, dated 1839 to early blank. ESTC T133817.
