Clean, scuffed covers and spine; some rubbing wear at edges, boards exposed at lower fore corners; 3/4 inch split at spine head; 1 inch square missing at spine tail; spine label gilt mostly effaced; partial split at rear cover/spine joint; tightly bound; owner name and date (1836?) in contemporary ink on front free end paper; approximately 1/3 of fold-out frontispiece engraving is present; 4 other engravings present: 2 are torn but complete, 1 is torn and missing lower fore corner, 1 is complete; 1 interior leaf is torn horizontally across middle; all sections present and bound in. Pages are moderately tanned and occasionally foxed throughout. Free end paper is heavily damaged and partially stuck front free end paper, possibly through rebinding. Hinges are cracked with exposed netting. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Moderate crushing to spine ends, with splitting, fraying and loss to the head, tail and joints. Gilt lettering is darkened. Peeling and loss to leather elements.

Clean hardback tightly bound in full black leather with gilt titles on a red spine panel, gilt bordering, minor rubbing at corners, page 22 is duplicated (printers error, no text missing) and has been crossed through with pencil, otherwise no inscriptions. Bound with 'A sketch of the life of John Bunyan', by the same publisher, dated 1813 - no portrait. 384 + 30 pages, frontispiece, 4 engravings on plates, engraved title page to 'A sketch' [presumably constituting the 6 beautiful engravings referred to on the title page as there don't appear to be any plates missing] .

Two previous owners' names in ink, some foxing and tanning, edge tear on one page, small chip at the bottom of one page with no text affected, Good. All six engravings present. Bunyan is also the author of "Pilgrim's Progress." . Good. Hardcover. 1806.

Cr. 4to; pp. viii, xlv-lii, 364; usually bound with The Life of John Bunyan, as called for on title page and contents page this copy bound without those preliminary pages ix- xlviii, engraved frontispiece, text illustrated with 92 engravings many being full page, bound in contemporary half leather with marbled boards, five raised bands, title lettered in gilt on spine, decorated spine, inscription on front endpaper, light to mild foxing throughout, still a good sound copy. The Holy War is written in the form of an allegory, it tells the story of the town "Mansoul". Though this town is perfect and bears the image of Shaddai (Almighty), it is deceived to rebel and throw of his gracious rule, replacing it instead with the rule of Diabolus. The town is eventually reclaimed by Emmanuel. The entire story is a masterpiece of Christian literature, describing vividly the process of the fall, conversion, fellowship with Emmanuel, and many more… Ler mais

Matching contemporary half calf bindings wqith marbled boards. Spines gilt in panels between raised bands. Spines faded but only minor rubbing to edges and corners. Some text leaves spotted, otherwise clean and tight internally. A very good set.
