McCormack was a Democratic member from Massachusetts of the United States Congress from 1928 to 1971, serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives under Kennedy and Johnson from 1963 to 1971. He subsequently became Executive Assistant to Senator Truman and later as appointments secretary was a close and trusted aide to the President. His reputation was of a no-nonsense, poker-faced man who knew how to get things done. He was convicted in 1956 for accepting a bribe and eventually served six months in federal prison.
